Football (1940-41)
Wes Goodner played football for the Wolf Pack during the 1940 and 1941 seasons after transferring from Ohio University where he led the nation in blocked punts. He came to Reno to play for Coach Jim Aiken and quickly gained prominence as a leading ground-gainer from his end position. He called signals from that position, and in 1940, he led the nation’s ends in scoring with 54 points. Upon graduation, Goodner coached at Fallon High School from 1942-51, a career that was interrupted by a two-year tour of service in the Navy during World War II. His 1943 football team won the state championship. After the war, he returned to Fallon as the football and boxing coach and later became the principal of Fallon HS. He later moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he headed up the largest insurance firm in the Caribbean and was very active in civic affairs. His two sons, Michael and Gary, became world class swimmers and both participated in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. In addition to the Nevada Athletics Hall of Fame, he was also inducted into the Fallon Greenwave Hall of Fame in 2017.
