Tony Zendejas led the nation in field goal kicking all three seasons he played for Nevada and is still prominent in all the D I-AA field goal kicking and kick scoring top five lists. He is still third in the total field goals category (70) despite having just a three-year career, just two behind the all-time leader, his brother Marty (72) who followed in Tony’s footsteps for the next four years. Not only accurate but able to hit from long range, he still holds Nevada’s three longest field goals (58, 55, and 55 yards) and seven of the school’s longest twelve field goals, all over 50 yards. His most dramatic field goal, however, was one of his shortest. His 32-yard field goal ended an overtime game in the 1983 NCAA I-AA playoffs against North Texas in a game now referred to as the “Snow Bowl” since it was played in blizzard conditions. Zendejas went onto a long and productive professional career, kicking for the Houston Oilers and the Los Angeles Rams. He is among the all-time top 10 National Football League kickers in the career field goal percentage.
