Football, Basketball, Track & Field (1922-24)
Leslie “Spud” Harrison, a football end during the early 1920s, was a real 60-minute player. He was recommended for the Hall of Fame by “Buck” Shaw, who was an assistant and head coach at Nevada in the 1920s and later became a successful coach at Santa Clara and with the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles. “I have always felt he was, beyond doubt, the most talented all-around end I coached during my six years at Nevada,” Shaw said. “On offense, he was a steady, consistent blocker with well-above average speed and maneuverability on pass patterns, and handled the ball with high-reach flutinous fingers. Defensively, he contained the offensive action in his responsible territory with artistic skill.” Harrison was also a standout in basketball and track during the same period. He was named to Nevada’s Team of the Century in 1998.
