Football, Basketball, Coach (1921-24, 1929-30)
A product of Elko, Chester Scranton came to the University of Nevada in the early 1920’s and immediately became a “workhorse” of athletics. He was hard-hitting fullback, and the stocky, rugged Scranton was also a fearless linebacker. He played on the Wolf Pack team of 1923 which tied California’s “Wonder Team,” then regarded as the best team in the nation. Scranton also played regularly on the varsity basketball team and was a track sprinter. After a brief high school coaching stint, he joined the Nevada athletic staff. He was an assistant coach in several sports, spending many years tutoring the freshmen football and basketball squads. He also directed intramural sports for many years.
