Basketball (1967-69)
An Illinois native, Alex Boyd set 10 scoring records during his three-year career with the Wolf Pack. He set single-game records for points scored (49), field goals (21) and field goals attempted (45); single-season records for points scored (688), scoring average (26.5), field goals attempted (666), free throws (162) and free throws attempted (244); and career records for points scored in three seasons (1,731), and scoring average (23.7). Many of these records still stand in Nevada’s basketball record book. Boyd finished second on the all-time career scoring list behind only Edgar Jones (1,877 points in 101 games) in just 73 games (now fifth). Besides his 49-point effort against Willamette in 1967, Boyd hit the third highest single-game output in school history that same season with 44 points against Oregon College. He also finished third on the all-time career rebounding list with 925 behind Jones and career record-holder Pete Padgett (now fifth). Since his graduation in 1970, Boyd became a successful basketball coach in Illinois and earned a master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Iowa. He then became a high school principal and coach.Â
