Football (1977)
Doug Betters played one season at the University of Nevada in 1977, earning Associated Press Division II All-America honors for the Wolf Pack after transferring from the University of Montana. He led all linemen with 72 tackles and paced the team in quarterback sacks with 10. He also recorded seven tackles for losses.  Betters was drafted in the sixth round by the Miami Dolphins. He started at defensive tackle for over a decade for the Dolphins and made appearances in Super Bowl VVII and XIX. In 1983, Betters recorded 16 sacks in 16 games, winning the NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award and being selected to the AFC Pro Bowl team. In 1983 and 1984, he was named the Miami Dolphins’ Outstanding Defensive Lineman. Betters played 146 NFL games and made 64.5 career sacks. He was named by the fans to the Dolphins' Silver Anniversary Team in 1991 and the Golden Anniversary Team in 2016. Betters was an assistant coach for the University of Montana Grizzlies in 1995 and 1996.
After his retirement, Betters became a fly fishing and whitewater guide in Montana before suffering a spinal cord injury while skiing in 1998. He founded the Doug Betters Winter Classic Organization in 1985, which provides money for children in need of medical care, and is involved with numerous other charitable organizations, including the Special Olympics and United Way. In 2002, he received the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Montana Award, while in 2008, Betters was inducted into the Miami Dolphins Ring of Honor during a ceremony at Dolphin Stadium.
