One of the best track athletes in school history, Otis Burrell won the 1966 NCAA championship in the high jump while also finishing fourth in the 120 yard hurdles. The two-time All-American was a four-time American Athletic Union champion in the high jump, winning three straight championships from 1965-67 and winning again in 1969. He attended Jefferson High School in Los Angeles, the same high school as Olympic champion Charles Dumas, the first man to jump 7 feet. Burrell became the ninth man to crack the 7 foot mark while competing at Los Angeles Valley College in 1963. He went on to win the silver medal at the 1967 Pan American Games, and his personal best was 7 feet 2 inches. Burrell has remained active in masters athletics as a high jumper and hurdler and coaches both events for Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.
