Men’s Cross Country, Track & Field (1981-84)
A native of Durban, South Africa, Derrick May was a four-time All-Big Sky Conference champion in the 10,000 meters (1981-84). He made Big Sky Conference history when he won both the 5,000 and the 10,000-meter runs at the conference meet his senior. After graduation, he became one of the world’s elite distance runners, winning the Houston Marathon with a time of 2:11:51 in 1987, but was not able to compete in the Olympics due to the IOC’s ban on South Africa due to apartheid. He settled in Ketchum, Idaho and opened African Fine Arts store. He earned his master’s degree in elementary education from the University of Nevada and now teaches English as a Second Language classes.
