Soares was a four-year starter form Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas. He was named Big Sky Conference Co-Player-of-the-Year in 1991-92. During that season, he led Nevada to a 19-10 record, which included a heartbreaking loss to Montana in the finals of the Conference Tournament. Soares is the school’s all-time leader in steals and assists and ranks seventh in scoring at Nevada
