Sherman Howard was a running back on the 1947 and the 1948 Nevada football teams which turned in a  18-4 overall record and made back-to-back bowl appearances. He also was a sprinter on the1948 track team. He came to Nevada after receiving two Battle Stars in the European Theater in the Army from 1943-46 and starting his college career at the University of Iowa. Howard went on to a six-year career in the National Football League, playing with the New York Yankees from 1949 through 1951 and moving to the Cleveland Browns from 1952 through 1954. He was one of several Nevada players to make it in the pros during the 1940s and joined eight other members of the 1948 Wolf Pack team in the Nevada Athletics Hall of Fame. Following his playing career, Howard was a scout for four teams: Green Bay, Cleveland, Dallas and the New York Giants, for seven years. Howard went onto serve as a high school teacher and school administrator in Richton Park, Ill., before retiring.
