Robert “Buster” McClure came to the Nevada campus from Dardanella, Ark., to make history at Nevada as a football lineman. He played center and then tackle, going both ways before the advent of the platoon system. McClure was a powerful blocker and tackler on the Nevada teams of 1944-46. He was named first team UPI All-Pacific Coast Conference and a third team UPI All-American in 1946. The 235-pound lineman also had the distinction of playing in two Shrine East-West All-Star games. From Nevada, McClure went to the pros, putting in several seasons with the Boston Yanks. Later he became an assistant coach along with Tampa Bay’s John McKay at the University of Oregon and returned to Reno to serve as an executive at the Holiday Hotel.
