Doug Byington turned in an undefeated career in boxing for the Wolf Pack. A native of Sparks, he and twin brother, Dal, were halfbacks for Coach John Robb, while their cousin, Dave, played end. High school boxing was flourishing then, too, and “Railroader” Byington was unbeaten in the prep ring. He was coached by Alf Sorensen and Geno Questa. His only setback was in a southwest AAU tourney in Las Vegas. He graduated in 1950 and entered University of Nevada. As a welterweight for Coach Jimmy Olivas, Byington was unbeaten in college ranks. An aggressive, swarming slugger, he won 12 bouts and fought to a draw with six-foot Dick Bender of San Jose, the Pacific Coast and National NCAA champion. Among his best wins was a one-minute KO of a UCAL opponent. Byington was also active in student affairs. He was president of the Block N lettermen’s society, president of Blue Key, vice-president of Sigma Nu, Senate representative for athletics and a member of Sundowners, Coffin & Keys. After graduation, he spent 1955-57 in Army active duty and then began his career as a teacher. He enjoyed a varied career which has included recognition in military, educational, civic and alumni affairs. He served as principal of O’Brien Middle School and president of Nevada association of School Administrators. He was a successful chairman of the Morrill Hall Restoration drive and was voted the “Outstanding Alumnus” award. Byington has also served as president of the University of Nevada Alumni Association. He served the city of Sparks as councilman and stayed active in the Nevada Army National Guard. He was promoted to brigadier general.
