Sportswriter (1937-60)
The name Ty Cobb was associated with northern Nevada sports for more than four decades. Born in Virginia City in 1915, Cobb graduated from the University of Nevada in 1937 and started his newspaper career, first as general assignment reporter covering sporting events and then for 22 years as the sports editor of the Nevada State Journal. He moved on to become the managing editor before retiring in 1975. He continued to write his popular column, Cobbwebs, in the Reno Gazette Journal long after his retirement and until his death in 1997. Cobb helped establish the first Babe Ruth League in Nevada, the Sierra Nevada Sportswriters and Broadcasters, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Intercollegiate Boxing Tournament, the California-Nevada Olympic Games Committee and the Nevada Golden Gloves. A decorated journalist, he was also inducted into the Nevada Press Association Hall of Fame.
