SAN FRANCISCO - Peyton Callens began his title defense at The Goodwin in impressive fashion Thursday morning, as the fifth-year senior initiated tournament play by carding a 69 (-1) in the opening round, placing him in a tie for 14th place in a field of 155 golfers after the first 18 holes of competition.
After teeing off on the back nine, Callens began the round with four consecutive pars before earning a birdie on the par-4 14th hole. Callens then proceeded to tally three more pars before picking up a bogey on the par-4 18th hole, as he completed the back nine at even par.
Callens bounced back from the bogey by parring the first six holes on the front nine before sinking a birdie on the par-4 7th hole. Callens picked up another bogey on the par-3 8th hole; but, he managed to tally his third birdie of the round on the final hole, as he finished the first 18 holes of the event at one shot under par. He will enter tomorrow's round sitting just three strokes back of first place.
Keita Okada finished second in the Wolf Pack lineup and tied for 111th overall after recording a 75 (+5) on the first day of competition. Okada tallied five pars and four bogeys on the back nine; however, he found his rhythm on the front nine, accumulating six pars and one birdie, as he will enter tomorrow's round with solid momentum
