Nevada Men's Golf captures commanding team win at The Watney

Fresno, Calif. - Nevada Men's Golf captured the program's first team win since 2024 at The Watney, the team finishing at even-par 840 (E) to win by seven strokes. On the individual side, freshman Riki Matsumoto clawed back a three stroke deficit heading into the final round, posting a two under-par 69 that was enough to head into a playoff. Matsumoto would lose to a birdie in the playoff, but finish second place, his best finish for the Pack in a strong freshman season.

Riki Matsumoto played strong golf in the final round, only dropping one stroke, offset by three birdies, the most important of which coming at the final hole where he holed a ten foot birdie putt to make his way into a playoff. Matsumoto continued his fine freshman season, notching his best collegiate finish this week with his second place finish (72-68-69=209) at four under-par, leading the field in bogey avoidance (4).

Leading the Wolf Pack scores on the final day was Ben Ortwein, who posted a three under-par 68 highlighted by six birdies. Ortwein jumped 21 places up the leaderboard in the final round to finish the tournament tied for 11th at two over-par.

Liam Gobin showed tremendous grit in his final round, three over through nine, needing a strong back nine to help the team score out Gobin delivered a stunning bogey free three under back nine to post an even par 71. Gobin's round was highlighted by four birdies and launched him into seventh place, his best finish of the season so far.

Rounding out the Pack counting scores was Jonathan Kim, who played a consistent day, making 17 pars and one bogey, contributing an important fourth counting score of one over-par. Kim finished tied with teammate Ortwein in a tie for 11th.

Final Pack starting five finisher was Monte Chumchaivate, who posted a final round of three over-par 75 highlighted by four birdies. Chumchaivate posted a counting score in the second round but failed to maintain that momentum in the final round, he finished in 56th place.

Playing as an individual, Aaron Leach posted a final round of two over-par 74, making three birdies but struggling to keep double bogies off the card.

En route to victory the Nevada team led the field in par five scoring, playing the fives in eleven under par, and also outparred the field, leading with 175 pars. The Pack will look to take the momentum of this win into The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford in three weeks time.
