ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – With 18 holes complete at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional, the Nevada men's golf team is tied for fifth place.
The Wolf Pack carded a team score of 285 on Monday and is currently at 3-under par and in a three-way tie for fifth with No. 12 Arizona State and South Carolina. Nevada will need to finish in the top five in the 14-team field after Wednesday's final round to advance to NCAA Nationals for the first time since 2006. The Pack is still very much in striking distance with Oregon State leading the way after round one at 7-under par. Nevada is just one shot back of jumping into third, and is two shots back from the runner-up.
Senior
Sam Meek posted one of the best individual rounds of the day as he fired a 5-under 67 in round one. Meek will head into round two in sole possession of second place and is just one shot back of the individual leader, Jonathan Brightwell of No. 1 Oklahoma. During his round on Monday, Meek recorded five birdies to just two bogeys and notched an eagle on the par 5 18
th.
Fellow senior
Brendan MacDougall carded the other under par round for Nevada in the opening round as he shot a 2-under 70. MacDougall got off to a rough start and found himself 2-over through his first five holes, but turned things around to play his final 13 holes at 4-under, which included four birdies on his final nine holes. He will enter round two tied for ninth in the 75-player field.
Elsewhere throughout the Pack lineup junior
Trey Davis carded a 1-over 73 and is tied for 33
rd place. Senior
Sam Harned's 3-over 75 has him in a tie for 49
th, while
Peyton Callens' 79 has him tied for 69
th place.
