RENO, Nev. – The Nevada men's golf team is headed to Arizona and has set its sights on winning its first Mountain West Championship this weekend.
The two-day, 54-hole championship begins this Friday, April 30 from OMNI Tucson National's Catalina Course in Tucson, Ariz. This marks the 13th time in the last 14 championships that the Mountain West will host its men's golf championship at this site. The only time in the last 14 championships the event has not been hosted there was during the 2018 season when the 11 teams competed at Gold Mountain GC in Bremerton, Wash.
If the Wolf Pack were to win this weekend it would be its first conference title since joining the Mountain West in 2012-13. The Wolf Pack's previous best finish in the MW Championship is third, which it has done twice (2015, 2018). According to Golfstat rankings, Nevada is the fourth-best team in the Mountain West at No. 65, just behind Boise State at No. 60. Two teams in the conference enter the championship ranked in the top 30 in the nation with New Mexico at No. 29 and San Diego State ranked at No. 25.
Head coach
Jacob Wilner will send the same lineup from the Wolf Pack's regular season finale last week at the PING Cougar Classic. Competing in the championship this week for Nevada will be seniors
Sam Harned,
Sam Meek and
Brendan MacDougall, along with juniors
Peyton Callens and
Trey Davis. Harned owns the lowest stroke average on the team at 71.5 and has two top 15 finishes this spring, including co-medalist honors at The Goodwin.
