Men’s golf moves up on day two of El Macero Classic

DAVIS, Calif. – In a much improved second round at the El Macero Classic, the Nevada men's golf team moved up to a tie for eighth with one round remaining.

The Wolf Pack shaved 20 stokes off of its team score between round one and round two, going from a 301 yesterday to a 7-under 281 on Sunday. Nevada's 7-under team score was the third-best team round of the afternoon and helped the Wolf Pack jump from 12th place into a tie for eighth in the 15-team field. With 18 holes remaining the Pack is 6-over for the tournament and is six shots back of leaping into the top five. San Francisco paces the team leaderboard at 14-under par and is four shots ahead of Saint Mary's for the lead.

It was a great day individually for the Pack as well as all six members improved their scores from round one by at least four strokes. The biggest improvement between round one and round two went to Connor Motherway. Motherway, who carded a 76 yesterday, fired a 4-under 68 on Sunday to jump 27 spots on the leaderboard and into a tie for 23rd. Motherway collected six birdies throughout his round to just two bogeys and is now even overall for the tournament. The other under par round of the day for Nevada belonged to Sam Meek. Meek jumped into the top 15 after posting a 3-under 69 today and is 2-under for the tournament. He was on fire on the front nine as he recorded all six of his birdies on that stretch of holes.

Nevada also had three players go from first round 76s to second round 72s on Sunday and move up into a tie for 41st in the 80-player field. Sam Harned, Brendan MacDougall and Peyton Callens, who is entered as an individual this week, turned in identical scores for the second straight day and are all 4-over for the tournament. Trey Davis improved his score as well as he turned in a 1-over 73 in round two to move into a tie for 53rd.

Matthew Sutherland of Fresno State continues to lead the individual field. Sutherland will take a three-shot lead at 10-under par into Monday's final round.
