BREMERTON, Wash. – After 36 holes of the Husky Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Club, the Nevada men's golf team is in third place in the 15-team field.
The Wolf Pack was even after this morning's first round and then turned it on in the afternoon. Nevada jumped four spots in the second round, going from seventh to third after shooting a 9-under par team score of 279. The Pack is 9-under for the tournament but will need some help tomorrow if it wants to catch tournament leader Washington. The Huskies lead the field at 22-under par, eight strokes ahead of second place Long Beach State.
Leading the charge for Nevada on day one was senior
Sam Meek, who turned in a solid day of golf and is tied for fifth place. Meek fired rounds of 70 and 69 on Monday and enters Tuesday's final round at 5-under par, just two shots behind Owen Avrit of LBSU for the individual lead. He totaled nine birdies in his 36 holes of play and did not commit anything worse than a bogey.
Nevada also has senior
Tony Gil inside the top 15 with one round remaining. Gil carded a 1-over 73 in the morning, but rebounded with a season-low 68 in round two. He was near perfect in the second round, making five birdies to just one bogey. His second round score helped him jump 25 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 11
th.
The Pack has two tied for 24
th place in the 78-player field as senior
Sam Harned and sophomore
Cam Kellett turned in identical scores on Monday. Harned shot a 73 in the first round and an even par 72 in the second, while Kellett fired the same rounds but reversed. Sophomore
Trey Davis rounds out the list of Pack golfers competing in this event and will enter the final round tied for 40
th. Davis struggled to a 5-over 77 in the opening round, but shaved seven strokes off his score in round two to post a 2-under 70.
Newcomer
Peyton Callens is also competing this week, teeing it up in the nearby Olympic College Invitational as an individual. In the 54-player field, Callens is tied for fifth after the first 36 of 54 holes. He shot a 71 in the opening round and a 75 in round two. Callens is at 2-over for the tournament, six shots behind the leader, Shawn Lu of Oregon State.
