TUCSON, Ariz. – Following day one of the 2019 Mountain West Championship, the Nevada men's golf team sits in seventh in the 11-team field.
The Wolf Pack carded a 5-under team score of 283 on Friday to claim the seventh spot after 18 of 54 holes of action. Despite being in seventh, Nevada is just four shots back of the lead, which is held by Colorado State and New Mexico. Just one shot separates the Pack from jumping into the top five, trailing UNLV and Fresno State for fifth. The Pack sat near the top of the leaderboard for most of the opening round but struggled on the final three holes, dropping six shots.
Nevada was led all day by junior
Tony Gil, who is currently tied for seventh place in the 55-player field. Gil fired a 3-under 69 on the day and is one of two Wolf Pack players under par. Gil was on fire for most of the day, making six birdies during his round. He was perfect until a bogey on No. 12 set him back a shot, and his only other blemish came on No. 18 with a double bogey. He trails Sean Carlon of New Mexico and Alex Lee of Fresno State for the individual lead by just two strokes.
Also under par for the Wolf Pack is junior
Stephen Osborne, who carded a 2-under 70 and is tied for 13
th place. Osborne played a flawless front nine, making three birdies and no bogeys. He did not commit a bogey until the par 4 14
th, but followed it up with another birdie on No. 15. Junior
Sam Meek and sophomore
Joey Vrzich both shot even par rounds of 72 on Friday and head into round two tied for 29
th place. Meek made two birdies in his round, but bogeyed two of his last three to post an even par score. Vrzich on the other hand, could not find a birdie until the back nine, going low on 10, 11 and 15. Junior
Sam Harned rounded out the Pack lineup in a tie for 42
nd after shooting a 2-over 74.
