DAVIS, Calif. – The Nevada men's golf team jumped three spots on the final day of action at the El Macero Classic to place fifth.
The Wolf Pack tied its best team score of the tournament with a 1-over 289 in the final round, which helped the team leap into the top five. For the event, the Pack finished at 12-over par and was three shots ahead of Fresno State for a top five. No. 10 Texas Tech captured the team title, finishing at even par after 54 holes, six strokes better than runner-up Oregon State.
Individually for the Wolf Pack it was led by sophomore
Sam Harned, who tied for fourth place. It marked Harned's fifth top 10 finish of the season. He carded a tournament-best round of 71 to finish at 1-under par for the event, two strokes off the leading score. He was the only Pack player to finish under par. After 12 holes in the final round he found himself at 2-over par, but birdied three straight holes to climb under par.
Sophomore
Joey Vrzich carded a 3-over 75 today to pick up his fifth top 15 finish of the season, and first of the spring season. Vrzich finished at 3-over par for the tournament. Junior
Sam Meek increased his position on the leaderboard after firing a 1-under 71 in the final round. Meek placed in a tie for 22
nd in the 80-player field at 5-over. Fellow junior
Tony Gil struggled in his final 18 holes, carding an 80 to tie for 29
th place. Freshman
Trey Davis shot a 1-over 73 on the day and tied for 34
th, while junior
Stephen Osborne tied for 44
th after a final round 74.
Nevada will now gear up for the Mountain West Championship at Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. on April 26-28.
