Davis, Calif. - Nevada Men's Golf opened play at the El Macero Classic, Friday, on a rainy round one where the scoring average was 74.68. Nevada posted a team total of five over-par 293 and sit in sixth place heading into round two.
Monte Chumchaivate and
Ben Ortwein both posted the best score of the day for the Wolf Pack, posting even-par 72's. Chumchaivate had an up and down round, making four birdies, spread two on each nine, offset by four bogies. Ortwein on the other hand played relatively consistent throughout the round, fighting back from being two over-par through six to birdie his last hole to come home even-par. The pair sit tied for 11th heading into round two.
Aaron Leach didn't have any issue making birdies on a rainy day one, making five on the round, three of those coming at par fives, he sits tied for first in the field for par five scoring. He will look to clean up the card a little bit tomorrow, sitting in 37th place posting a two over-par 74.
Riki Matsumoto had the highlight for the Pack on day one, making a hole in one on the 238 yard par three third hole, the first of his collegiate and personal career. He struggled to find momentum following the ace, posting a three over-par 75.
Liam Gobin matched Matsumoto's round of three over-par 75, fighting back after a tough start, four over through six, playing the final 12 holes in one under par. The pair sit three over par and in a tie for 48th place.
The Pack sit in sixth place and will tee it up at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow for round two.
