DAVIS, Calif. – With just one round remaining in the El Macero Classic, the Nevada men's golf team has three inside the top 10.
The Wolf Pack shaved nine strokes off of its team score from round one to round two, carding a 1-over 289 on Saturday. Nevada sits at 11-over par for the tournament and is in eighth place in the 15-team field. No. 10 Texas Tech leads the tournament at 3-under par, two strokes ahead of second place Cal State Fullerton. The Red Raiders and Titans are the only two teams under par after 36 holes.
Nevada has a few players that are in the hunt for the individual crown with three inside the top 10. Junior
Tony Gil, who is entered as an individual, is the closest to the leader at 1-under par for the tournament. Gil fired a 1-under 71 today and is just two shots behind Sandy Scott and Ivan Ramirez of Texas Tech for the lead. After 13 holes in his second round, Gil found himself at 1-over par but birdied two of his last five holes to jump down to a round of 71.
A pair of sophomores in
Joey Vrzich and
Sam Harned are both tied for ninth heading into Sunday's final round. Vrzich and Harned each posted even par rounds of 72 for the second straight day and are even for the tournament. Vrzich made one birdie, one bogey and 16 pars during his round, while Harned collected four birdies and four bogeys.
Junior
Sam Meek also matched his first round score, posting a 3-over 75 in round two. Meek is at 6-over for the tournament and in a tie for 38
th place. He finished his round going par-par-birdie-eagle, recording his seventh eagle of the season. Freshman
Trey Davis jumped 17 spots on the day after he carded an even par 72, seven strokes better than his opening round. Davis is currently tied for 43
rd in the 80-player field. Junior
Stephen Osborne also improved on day two, going from a first round 80 to a second round 73. Osborne leapt 13 positions into a tie for 53
rd.
