DAVIS, Calif. – After the first 18 holes of action at the El Macero Classic, the Nevada men's golf team is in fifth place.
The Wolf Pack put together a 10-over team round of 298 on Friday to sit in fifth place in the 15-team field. Nevada is by no means out of the tournament title hunt as none of the 15 teams finished the first round under par. The Pack trails the 18-hole leader and tournament host, UC Davis, by just eight strokes with 36 holes remaining.
Nevada has three golfers inside the top 10 as sophomores
Joey Vrzich and
Sam Harned and junior
Tony Gil are all tied for sixth place. Vrzich and Harned's scores were tallied into the team score, however Gil is entered this week as an individual so his score did not. All three carded an even par 72 in the first round and trail the leaders by two shots. They also had very similar looking scorecards as each of them collected three birdies and three bogeys during their round.
Junior
Sam Meek is the fourth-highest ranking member of the day after day one after he shot a 3-over 75. Meek recorded three birdies and six bogeys in his 18 holes and is tied for 25
th place in the 80-player field. Freshman
Trey Davis is currently tied for 61
st after he put together a 7-over round of 79. Junior
Stephen Osborne rounds out the Pack lineup in a tie for 67
th after an 80 in round one.
