Nevada earns top 10 finish at The Goodwin

PALO ALTO, Calif. – After finishing day one in 25th place, the Nevada men's golf team jumped all the way to a tie for ninth after the final round of The Goodwin.

"Going from 25th place after the first round and finishing top 10 in one of the best fields in college golf, is something these guys should be very proud of," said head coach Jacob Wilner.

The Wolf Pack carded a 3-over 283 in the final round to jump into a four-way tie for ninth in the 26-team field along with No. 27 BYU, No. 35 Oregon and No. 45 Northwestern. Over the last 36 holes of the tournament, Nevada ranked second in the field shooting just 3-over par in that span. The Pack jumped seven spots in the final round to jump into the top 10. Tournament host Stanford ran away with the team title, besting runner-up No. 6 USC by 18 strokes. The Cardinal was the only team to finish under par at 8-under.

Nevada was led by sophomore Sam Harned, who earned his fourth top 10 of the season. Harned tied for ninth place in the 135-player field after he carded a 3-over 73 in the final round. He finished the event at 1-over par. Junior Sam Meek fired his best round of the tournament with an even par 70 on Saturday, jumping 24 spots into a tie for 60th. Meek had a balanced day on the course, with two bogeys and two birdies, both of which came on the back nine.

It was sophomore Joey Vrzich that notched the low Wolf Pack round of the day though, shooting a 3-under 67. Vrzich rebounded nicely after a pair of 80s earlier in the tournament and tied for 101st place. He collected seven birdies during his final round, including two on the last five holes. Freshman Trey Davis placed in a tie for 65th after he shot a 75 on Saturday to finish at 11-over for the tournament. Junior Stephen Osborne shot a round of 73 in the final 18 holes to tie for 75th place. Osborne finished birdie-birdie in his round.

Brandon Wu of Stanford bested his teammate David Snyder in a playoff to claim the individual title.

Nevada has one more event before the Mountain West Championship, the El Macero Classic April 12-14 at El Macero Country Club in Davis, Calif.
