Nevada claims program-record third win

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Needing a come-from-behind victory, the Nevada men's golf team did just that Tuesday afternoon, capturing the team title at the Olympic Club Intercollegiate.

This marks a program-best third win this season for the Wolf Pack after it also claimed team titles at the Nick Watney Invitational and Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational in the fall. Nevada began the day five shots behind the 36-hole leader Cal State Fullerton, and posted the best team round of the afternoon to win the event by one stroke.

"This was a huge win for our program. We were only able to play one round of golf the entire month of February due to the weather," said head coach Jacob Wilner. "I'm very proud of the patience and perseverance the team has shown all semester."

The Wolf Pack combined for a team score of 286 today, which was 2-over par but the top score in the entire field of 13 teams. Cal State Fullerton posted an 8-over team round, dropping them down to the runner-up position. Nevada finished the tournament at 3-under par overall and was one of just two teams, along with the Titans, to be under par.

Helping Nevada to victory was junior Sam Meek, who took home the individual title. It is Meek's second individual win after he also won the El Macero Classic last season. Meek finished the tournament at 4-under par after firing a 1-under 70 in the final round. He was steady throughout his final 18 holes, and needed to be, winning the title by one stroke. He played his final eight holes at 1-under with one birdie and seven pars.

The Pack also had two others place inside the top 10 as junior Stephen Osborne captured a career-best tie for seventh and sophomore Sam Harned tied for ninth place in the 72-player field. Osborne shot a 2-over 73 on his final day, but finished at 1-under for the tournament to stay in the top 10. Harned began the day in a tie for 15th, but jumped six spots thanks to a 1-under round of 70, making five birdies along the way. Fellow sophomore Joey Vrzich collected a tie for 27th after he carded one of his best rounds of the event with a 2-over 73. Freshman Trey Davis rounded out the list of Pack golfers in a tie for 35th.

Nevada will go for its fourth win of the season at its next event, The Duck, on March 25-26 at Emerald Valley Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
