SAMMAMISH, Wash. – In its second event of the season, the Nevada men's golf team earned a second place finish at the Husky Invitational at Aldarra Golf Club.
"This week was both physically and mentally exhausting. The course was very difficult and we had several fog delays to endure as well," said head coach
Jacob Wilner. "The guys did a great job at staying patient and as a result we had a solid team runner-up finish."
In the rare 6-count-5 scoring format, the Wolf Pack finished the event at 37-over par to earn the runner-up spot. Tournament-host Washington captured the team title by finishing 16 shots lower than Nevada. The Pack did turn in its best team round of the week though in the final round, finishing the day at 5-over. Nevada ranked second in the field in both birdies and pars for the week.
For the second straight tournament the Wolf Pack was led by sophomore
Joey Vrzich, who earned a tie for second place in the 76-player field. Vrzich turned in rounds of 69, 72 and 73 to finish at 1-over par for the tournament. He finished two shots behind the individual champion, Robert Moran of Washington, who was the only player in the field to finish the event under par. Vrzich's steady play was evidenced by his 37 pars during his three rounds, which ranked second in the field. He now has a tournament win and a runner-up finish under his belt to start the year.
The Pack also got a top 10 outing from junior
Sam Meek, who tied for ninth place at 7-over par. Meek fired his best round of the event on Wednesday with a 2-under 69, which tied the Wolf Pack low round for the week as well. Nevada had three others of its six competitors place inside the top 30. Junior
Sam Harned earned a tie for 21
st place after recording rounds of 76, 74 and 74 and finished the event at 11-over par.
Newcomer
Tony Gil notched his best finish in a Pack uniform with a tie for 23
rd. Gil, who recorded the only eagle by a Pack player in the second round, turned in a 1-under round of 70 for his final round, setting a new low as a member of the Pack. Junior
Stephen Osborne was on pace for a top 15 finish but struggled to close out his round today and entered the clubhouse with an 80. He tied for 27
th place in the event. Freshman
Trey Davis rebounded from his 82 in round two with a 3-over 74 in the final round and finished in a tie for 49
th.
Nevada wastes little time in getting back to competition as the team will compete in the Nick Watney Invitational Oct. 1-2 at Dragonfly Golf Club in Madera, Calif.
