DAVIS, Calif. – Recording the best team round of the day, the Nevada men's golf team is comfortably in the lead after two rounds of the El Macero Classic.
The Wolf Pack posted a 4-under team score of 284 on Saturday and was one of just two teams in the 13-team field to finish under par. That superb play pushed Nevada out to a 15-shot lead with one round to go. The Pack sits at 1-under par for the tournament, the only team under par in the field. No. 12 Texas Tech has a hold on the runner-up spot at 14-over.
All five of the Pack players in the lineup enter Sunday's final round in the top 30, including four in the top 15. Senior
Grant Booth leads the individual field of 81 at 3-under par and has put himself in a position to capture the first individual title of his career. In round two Booth carded a 1-under 71 and overtook the lead from his teammate
Sam Meek. He made five birdies throughout his round and leads the field with nine overall.
Meek is now one shot behind Booth after shooting a 1-over 73 on Saturday. He strung together three birdies during his round, including two on the back nine. He enters the final round two shots ahead of two players tied for third. Meek is playing in just his third event as a member of the Wolf Pack after transferring from Southern Illinois this semester.
While Booth and Meek swapped spots on the individual leaderboard, freshman
Joey Vrzich and sophomore
Sam Harned made the most moves on the day. Vrzich used an even par round of 72 to jump 13 spots into a tie for sixth. After a double bogey setback on No. 15 today, he closed his round with three straight birdies to reach even par for the day. Harned made vast improvement going from an 80 yesterday to a team-low round of 68 on Saturday, which moved him 45 spots into a tie for 11
th place. He was near perfect in his second round, making six birdies to just two bogeys.
Rounding out the Pack lineup is junior
Jooho Lee who also improved on his round one score. Lee went from a 77 on Friday to a 2-over 74 in round two. While he did not make any birdies on Saturday, he did stay steady with 16 pars. The Pack also had three individuals entered in the event in seniors
Corey Eddings and
Kaleb Gorbahn and sophomore
Stephen Osborne. The trio struggled in their second round, posting rounds of 79, 84 and 84, respectively.
