Harned leads Nevada on day one of The Goodwin

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – A solid opening round at The Goodwin for the Nevada men's golf team is in the books as the Wolf Pack is tied for seventh place.

In a field comprised of 25 teams the tee times were broken up into two groups, a morning session and an afternoon session. The Wolf Pack was grouped into the morning session and tied with Washington for the lowest team score of that group, a 1-under 283. As the afternoon groups teed off that score held up for the Pack as it sits in the top 10 after day one, above No. 16 USC and No. 22 Arizona State. Tournament host No. 20 Stanford paces the field at 7-under par, one shot better than Northwestern.

Individually for Nevada it was led by sophomore Sam Harned who recorded a team-best five birdies on the day to post a 3-under round of 68. The 68 was one shy of tying Harned's career low. Harned was consistent throughout the day, making just two bogeys in his round. He was the only Pack player to post a round under par and sits in a tie for sixth place. Senior Grant Booth made 16 pars during his round, a birdie to close out the front nine and a bogey to close out the back nine, giving him an even par 71 for the first round. Booth enters day two tied for 26th place in the 135-player field.

Fellow senior Kaleb Gorbahn and freshman Joey Vrzich each fell one stroke behind Booth with 1-over par rounds of 72 on Thursday and are tied for 45th. Gorbahn struggled on the front nine, playing the first half of his round at 3-over par. He turned it around on the back side however, birding four of the final nine holes. Vrzich also struggled to start, going bogey, double bogey on his first two holes. He settled in though in the rest of his round to record the round of 72. Newcomer Sam Meek could not get the birdies to fall on Thursday as he carded a 7-over round of 78 to sit in a tie for 119th.

Jeffrey Swegle of Stanford posted the best individual round of the day, an 8-under par 63, and leads by two strokes over Norman Xiong of Oregon.

Nevada will continue its run at The Goodwin with the second round of play on Friday. Live scoring for the entire tournament will be available on GolfStat.com.
