RENO, Nev. – The Nevada men's golf team will compete in one of the nation's premier college golf events, The Goodwin, this weekend from TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
"This is the youngest group that we've taken to a tournament all season, but the guys have been playing really well. We're ready to get out there and compete with some of the best teams in the country," said head coach
Jacob Wilner.
The three-day event begins on Thursday with the first 18 holes and will conclude with the final round of 18 holes on Saturday. This is the Wolf Pack's third consecutive season competing in this event with finishes of 12
th in each of the last two seasons. The field features some of the toughest competition in the nation as 12 of the 25 teams enter the weekend ranked in the top 50, including six in the top 25. Oklahoma carries the highest ranking of all 25 teams at No. 10.
The Goodwin, formally known as the United State Intercollegiate, has a rich history since its start in 1968. Tournament-host Stanford has claimed 15 team victories and 15 individual titles at its event, the most of any program in each category. The Cardinal won two team titles in a row in 2013 and 2014 and claimed last year's event in 2017 as well.
Nevada enters the tournament playing some of its best golf of the season. In its first two tournaments of the spring, the Pack has earned a sixth place and third place team finish. Nevada is led by senior
Grant Booth, who is proving to be one of the best individuals in the nation with a stroke average of 69.8. Booth has not finished an event higher than 18
th place in his seven events and is 39-under par on the season.
As mentioned earlier, Wilner will be sending his youngest lineup of the season with Booth and
Kaleb Gorbahn the only seniors. Wilner will also take sophomores
Sam Harned and
Sam Meek and freshman
Joey Vrzich. Vrzich owns the second-lowest stroke average on the team but Meek impressed in his Wolf Pack debut last time out with a tie for sixth at the Jackrabbit Invitational.
