TUCSON, Ariz. – Following a round and a half of the National Invitational Tournament from Tucson National Golf Course, the Nevada men's golf team sits in sixth place in the 16-team field.
The second round was suspended due to darkness and will resume early Monday morning before play begins in the final round of competition. The Wolf Pack carded a team score of 280 in the opening round, which is 8-under par and is tied for its second-lowest team score of the season. Nevada is most of the way through its second round as well with about two to three holes remaining per golfer.
As the current standings lie, Nevada is sixth at 11-under par, one shot behind No. 21 Colorado State for fifth. UNLV and Arizona State, both of which are ranked in the top 50 nationally, have placed a lot of distance between themselves and the rest of the field. The Rebels currently lead the event at 35-under par by two strokes over the Sun Devils. Tournament host Arizona sits in third at 25-under par and Iowa State is fourth at 16-under.
On the individual side, senior
Grant Booth and freshman
Joey Vrzich both carded 4-under par rounds of 68 for their first round. For Vrzich, that sets a new season low round. As it stands though, through 16 holes in round two for both Booth and Vrzich, Booth is tied for 14
th place and Vrzich sits in a tie for 16
th in the 92-player field. Continuing their even play on the course, both men eagled the par 5 second in their second round and racked up eight birdies on the day.
Elsewhere for the Wolf Pack, senior
Kaleb Gorbahn and sophomore
Sam Harned also had a pretty even day as they both shot an even par round of 72 in the first round and are tied for 42
nd place with two holes to play in round two. Gorbahn led the Pack by making nine birdies on the day while Harned ranks in a tie for first in the field with 27 pars. Junior
Jooho Lee also teed it up for Nevada today and sits in a tie for 74
th after opening up with a 4-over round of 76.
Shintaro Ban of UNLV holds a one-shot lead over Chun An Yu of Arizona State for the individual lead. Ban is currently 12-under par, while Yu is at 11-under.
Nevada will wrap up the National Invitational Tournament with the conclusion of the second round and the third round on Monday.
