PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The 36
th-ranked Nevada men's golf team teed it up in the first round of the Saint Mary's Invitational on Monday and is currently in 12
th place.
The Wolf Pack struggled in the opening round, shooting a team score of 297 and sits at 13-over par with two rounds remaining. Nevada is just four shots behind Utah to crack into the top 10 in the 18-team field. Of those 18 teams, just four finished day one at par or better. No. 19 BYU dominated the day, turning in a 271 and is 13-under par, 10 shots ahead of No. 8 Pepperdine for the lead.
Leading the way for Nevada on day one was junior
Stephen Osborne, who carded a 1-over 72 for his opening round. Osborne avoided any big numbers on his scorecard and added three birdies to his round. He enters round two tied for 27
th in the 104-player field. The second-best score of the day for the Pack came from junior
Sam Harned and his 3-over 74. Harned holed out for eagle on the par 4 fourth, but a double on No. 8 and four bogeys added to his score. He is currently tied for 46
th place.
Junior
Sam Meek led the team with five birdies throughout his round, but also committed a triple and two doubles to finish with a 4-over 75. Meek will enter the second round tied for 57
th. Sophomore
Joey Vrzich and junior
Tony Gil each turned in rounds of 76 on Monday and are tied for 69
th.
Peter Kuest of BYU fired a course-record round of 61 to pace the field. He is 10-under par and has a seven-shot lead over Joshua McCarthy of Pepperdine and Soren Lind of San Francisco.
