STOCKTON, Calif. – Following its best team round of the season, the Nevada men's golf team finds itself in second place with one round remaining at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.
The 40
th ranked Wolf Pack posted the best round of the day with a massive 13-under par performance. The total team score from the second round of 271 is the Pack's best of the season and is tied for the fifth-lowest round in program history. Nevada used its strong play to move up three spots on the leaderboard into second place. At 16-under par for the tournament, the Pack will enter Saturday's final round just two shots behind No. 16 BYU for the lead.
Nevada was led by a pair of juniors in
Sam Harned and newcomer
Tony Gil. Harned torched the course today, notching a new career high with a 7-under 64, which is tied for the lowest round of the tournament and is tied for the second-best round in Wolf Pack history. The Rocklin, Calif. native played a perfect round of golf with seven birdies and no bogeys, including five birdies on the back nine. Combined with his 71 from yesterday, Harned is at 7-under for the tournament, just two shots back of the individual lead in a tie for third.
Tied with Harned at 7-under and in third place is Gil, who also carded a career low round on Friday, finishing the day with a 5-under 66. This is not just a career low for Gil at Nevada, but a collegiate career low with his previous best being a 69 at Houston. Gil started the day strong and ended strong, making four birdies on the front nine and two on the back side. His only blemish came with a bogey on the par 4 10
th.
Nevada got solid play from up and down its lineup as other members chipped in to the team's rise as well. Junior
Stephen Osborne tied his career low with a 1-under 70 today. Osborne was balanced in his round, making three birdies, 13 pars and just two bogeys. He is currently tied for 47
th in the 90-player field. The other counted score of the day came from junior
Sam Meek and his even par 71. Meek made five birdies today and is tied for 53
rd. Sophomore
Joey Vrzich was unable to find many red numbers during his round, making just one birdie, but did manage 14 pars to turn in a 2-over 73. He is currently tied for 18
th.
