MADISON, Wis. – A solid start to the 2017-18 season for the Nevada men's golf team as the Wolf Pack notched a tie for sixth place at the Badger Invite, hosted at University Ridge Golf Course.
The Wolf Pack tied with Iowa State for the sixth spot in the 16-team field and was one of just seven teams to finish the event under par. Texas A&M led from start to finish and captured the team title, finishing at 25-under par, six strokes better than runner-up finisher Kansas. Nevada carded an even par team score of 288 on Tuesday, giving the team a three-day total of 862 (2-under).
Freshman
Joey Vrzich tied with senior
Kaleb Gorbahn for the low Wolf Pack round of the day as both fired a 2-under par 70. Vrzich was Nevada's top finisher in the event, tying for 13
th place in his collegiate debut. He ended his three-day outing at 3-under for the tournament after back-to-back rounds under par. During his final round he had two bad holes but made five birdies, including birdies on the first two holes of his round.
Gorbahn had a rebound day, shaving seven strokes off of his second round score. He made six birdies during his final round and played the back nine at 3-under par. Overall he finished in the top 30 in the 102-player field at 2-over par. Senior
Grant Booth notched a top 15 finish in his 2017-18 debut, tying for the 15
th spot. He shot an even par 72 on Tuesday and finished the tournament at 2-under overall.
A couple of dreaded "others" on senior
Corey Eddings' scorecard caused him to post a 79 on Tuesday and drop to a tie for 38
th place. Aside from those two holes he played the rest of his round at even par. Redshirt junior
Jooho Lee tied for 62
nd in his first collegiate event since May of 2016 and finished at 9-over par. Newcomer
Sam Harned, who was entered as an individual, carded his best round of the event on Tuesday, a 1-over 73 after making five birdies. He tied for 80
th place.
Nevada will return to the course at the Tucker Invitational, hosted by Mountain West foe New Mexico, Sept. 22-23 in Albuquerque at Championship Course.
