Clovis, Calif. - Nevada kicked off day one of the Mountain West Outdoor Championships today in Clovis, California.
The heptathlon kicked off action at the 2025 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships, 100m hurdles was the first event to race with Johanna Haas besting the group with a time of 13.99 to place first. Valeria Paez-Rueda placed eighth with a time of 14.85, whilst Alma Kathan placed eleventh with a time of 15.20.
Next up for the hept athletes was the high jump, where Valeria Paez-Rueda was the best of the group clearing 1.63m to place third. Johanna Haas was next best, almost clearing her personal best height, clearing 1.57m to place sixth. Alma Kathan placed eleventh clearing 1.51m.
Shot put followed and Valeria Paez-Rueda set a personal best mark of 11.70m to place fifth, while Johanna Haas set a mark of 12.30m to place second. Alma Kathan placed eighth with a mark of 9.36m.
Closing out the heptathlon action for day one was the 200m, where Johanna Haas set a new personal record of 24.54 to place second. Alma Kathan placed seventh with a time of 25.56 and Valeria Paez-Rueda ran a 26.35 to place 12th.
Haas sits in second in the total points after day one with a total of 3291 points, Paez-Rueda sits fifth with 3041 points and Alma Kathan sits eleventh with 2771 points.
Kicking off the non-heptathlon action was the Javelin competition, where Lilly Urban continued her form. Much like the rest of the season, Urban's best attempt came on her first attempt of the day, throwing 56.89m to win gold by over three meters. Urban now sits in eighth in the NCAA and second all-time in the Mountain West. Izzy Steerman provided a valiant attempt in snatching bronze, coming up just 9cm short of third place, throwing 45.18m. Johanna Haas rounded out the group throwing 44.46m to place fifth.
Magdalene George flashed her speed in the 200m prelims, setting the number one qualifying time (23.19) to be the number one seed in Sunday's final. Vivian Groppe also competed, running a 24.68 to place 21st.
In the 800m, Halyn Senegal was the best finisher for the Pack, running a 2:11.68 to place 15th. Kylee Denver was not far behind, running a 2:12.72 to place 16th. Rounding out the 800m group was Mary DeMartini who ran a personal best 2:13.23 to place 18th.
400m hurdles was next where Caitlynn Holt placed 17th with a time of 1:04.72.
Rounding out the day was the 10k, where Claire Nelson placed 18th (36:48.68) and Aubrey Thompson placed 21st (38:10.72).
The Pack will be back in action to complete the heptathlon and continue competition in jumps, distance and sprint races.
