Men's Cross Country

Men finish fourth; Women ninth at USF Invitational

SAN FRANCISCO – Nevada men's cross country captured a fourth place finish in a field of 17 teams, and the women's squad finished ninth place finish in a field of 13 teams at the USF Invitational, at Golden Gate Park Friday afternoon. Junior Claire Nelson snagged a 19th place finish in the Women's 6K race, the highest finish for the women's squad while Daniel Sayo finished 23rd marking the highest finish on the men's side.

This is the first time the men's and women's squads have traveled back to San Francisco since the 2021 season, with the men finishing fifth and the women sixth. This year, the men's team averaged a time of 25:18, 14 seconds faster than in 2021, and the women's team averaged a 22:34, just off the 2021 average in spite of the course being approximately 40 meters longer than it was in 2021.

The number eight nationally ranked Stanford women's team won the title for the women with five of their runners claiming spots in the top eight, including first and second place. Host team San Francisco finished fifth. The Pack women finished only 13 points out of seventh behind Stanislaus State and Sacramento State.

On the men's side, the Pack's fourth place finish is an improvement from two years ago at this meet, finishing just behind host team San Francisco, and coming out on top over Stanislaus State. Mountain West foe Boise State captured the men's team title with four of their athletes finishing in the top eight. Both squads came out ahead of Mountain West competitors San Jose State and Fresno State.

The Pack women had a day of solid performances. Nelson ran in a time of 21:32.3, an all-time personal record by 19 seconds, the third fastest performance from a Nevada member on the Golden Gate Park course. Ashley Boone ran an exceptional race, dropping 73 seconds from her previous personal record with a 51st place finish in a time of 22:41.6, putting her at the eighth fastest performance on the course for the Nevada women.

Freshmen Thalia Arrate and Hannah Lee made their 6K debut, ultimately putting together very good races, finishing in 55th (22:45.5.) and 60th (22:52) respectively. Coming in at 64th place, Kylee Denver saw a personal record of 22:58.5, dropping 11 seconds. Rounding out the women's team, Marena Middleton finished 97th (23:58.5), Abigail Clarke finished 105th (24:22.5), marking her first cross country race in two years, and Liz Shaw in 111th (24:43). Freshman Mary DeMartini also made her 6K debut, finishing in 119th with a time of 25:35.9.

For the men's squad, Sayo's performance with a time of 24:57.4 marks an 18 second improvement from the 2021 season putting him as the fastest time on the course from a member from the Nevada men's squad.

Junior Zander Simone saw the next highest finish for the Pack men in 35th place in a time of 25:13.9, marking the third fastest time on the course for Nevada. Freshman Jaedyn Chase finished fourth fastest on the men's side, recording a stellar performance with his time of 25:21.5 finishing 40th in his first collegiate 8K.
