Strong second round bumps Nevada to second

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – After 36 of the 54 holes at the Jackrabbit Invitational, the Nevada men's golf team sits in second place in the 13-team field.

The Wolf Pack struggled in the opening round of action, shooting a team score of 6-over par and found itself in eighth place. Nevada took a huge jump in the afternoon round however, carding a team score of 8-under par, the best team round in the second round. With that strong play the Pack moved up six spots into second place with 18 holes remaining. Nevada is at 2-under par for the tournament, but trails Oral Roberts by 12 strokes.

Nevada has two seniors inside the top 10 after day one with Sam Harned and Sam Meek both tied for sixth in the 84-player field. Meek recorded a consistent day, shooting a 2-under 70 in the morning and a 1-under 71 in the afternoon to sit at 3-under overall. Meek had nothing worse than bogey on his scorecard today and totaled seven birdies throughout his two rounds. Harned shot a 74 in round one, but followed that up with a 5-under round of 67 in round two. In his 36 holes of play today, Harned totaled 12 birdies and an eagle. Both Harned and Meek are nine shots back of the individual leader.

Sophomore Trey Davis is currently inside the top 20 as he is tied for 18th place after day one. Davis carded a 3-over 75 to start his run but shaved five strokes off his score to turn in a 2-under 70 in the afternoon. He was flawless from holes 4-18 in his second round, recording three birdies and no bogeys. Rounding out the official Wolf Pack lineup are senior Tony Gil and freshman Connor Motherway, who are both tied for 28th place. Both Gil and Motherway improved their scores from round one to two with Gil going from a 76 to an even par 72, and Motherway going from a 75 to a 73.

Nevada also has two players entered into the event as individuals, meaning their scores do not count towards the team score. Sophomore Peyton Callens is currently in sole possession of 25th place after turning in a 2-under 70 and a 76 on the day to sit at 2-over par for the tournament. Redshirt freshman Mitch Abbott enters the final round tied for 65th at 13-over par.
