SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Nevada Cross country's men and women put out a strong effort at the Capital Cross Challenge this morning in Sacramento, Calif. The teams finished with 21st place in the Women's Invitational and 27th for the Men's Invitational race.
The men raced first in an 8k invitational and an 8k open section. Freshman, Adam Sjolund, finished first for Nevada in the invitational section with a time of 25:22. He was followed by Massimiliano Swenson who ran a time of 25:34 and George Skivington who ran 25:50.
In the open section, Mahkai Davis-Macías finished on top for Nevada with a time of 28:08. Behind him was Shane Helton who ran 28:28 and Alex Mendoza who ran 29:25.
The women also participated in an invitational and an open section, both 6k in length. Mikayla Shults finished in the lead for Nevada with a time of 21:48. She was followed closely by Alexis Melendrez who finished with 21:49. Just behind them was Lauryn Massic who finished with 22:22.
The women's open section ended with Kalia Pfeffer who ran 23:06 followed by Rheanna Jackson with 23:28. Imogen Olvera finished third for Nevada in the open race with a time of 24:32.
"I'm really pleased with their performance," said cross country head coach Kirk Elias. He noted that while the men had a strong individual effort from the top three athletes," the women had more of a group effort."
The Capital Cross Challenge was the second meet of the season for Nevada. Next up is the Pre-National Invitational for the women and the Bronco Invitational for the men both on October 19th.
