Eddings leads the way for Nevada in NCAA Regionals

NORMAN, Okla. – After 18 holes of action at the NCAA Norman Regionals, the Nevada men's golf team sits in eighth place in the 14-team field.

The Wolf Pack combined for a team score of 294 (+6) in the first round at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club to place itself in eighth. Needing to finish in the top five in order to advance to the national championship, the Pack is currently four shots behind fifth place San Diego State with two rounds remaining. Of the 14 teams in the field, just one finished under par as the defending national champs and tournament host No. 3 Oklahoma shot a 5-under par round. Behind the Sooners, No. 10 Auburn, No. 15 Arkansas and No. 27 North Florida are all tied for second at even par.

Senior Corey Eddings, who was the first to tee off for the Wolf Pack, led the way on day one. Eddings was the only Nevada player to turn in a round under par, carding a 2-under 70. He was able to avoid anything worse than a bogey on his scorecard and made six birdies on the day. Eddings was one of just 15 players in the 75-player field to score under par and enters round two in a tie for fourth.

Freshman Joey Vrzich finished his opening round one shot shy of carding a score under par as he notched an even par round of 72. Like Eddings, Vrzich made six birdies throughout his round, four of which came on the final seven holes of his round. He entered the last two holes of his round at 2-over par and finished with back-to-back birdies to pull even. He will tee off on Tuesday in a tie for 16th place.

Sophomore Sam Meek posted the third-best Wolf Pack round of the day with a 3-over 75. Meek made four birdies on the day and his only trip up was a double bogey on No. 1. He ended day one tied for 36th place. Fellow sophomore Sam Harned carded a 5-over 77 for his round and is tied for 57th. Senior Grant Booth struggled to find red numbers on Monday and posted a round of 80, placing him in a tie for 66th.

Blaine Hale of Oklahoma leads the individual field at 5-under par after 18 holes of play. His teammate Quade Cummins and William Buhl of Arkansas trail Hale for the lead by two strokes.

Nevada will continue its run at NCAA Regionals with the second round of play on Tuesday. Live scoring for the entire tournament is available on GolfStat.com.
