RENO, Nev.  – The Nevada cross country team completed its season last week, finishing 10th at the NCAA Mountain Regional. The race capped off a historic season that saw the team break program records, and several honors received.
Â
The season kicked off with the San Francisco Invitational, where the Wolf Pack topped two teams that were nationally ranked at the time in California and San Francisco. The team had three runners finish in the top 10, with juniors
Lindsey Sickler,
Hiley Dobbs and
Cora Gallop taking fifth, seventh and ninth respectively.
Â
The week after the race, the team received votes in the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's national poll for the first time since 2003. The Wolf Pack would receive votes for three straight weeks.
Â
The Pack followed up the strong performance with another second-place finish in Oregon's Dellinger Invitational. The race saw Sickler, Dobbs, Gallop,
Stefanie Ortega and
Katarina Stashyn all notch personal records. Sickler's time of 20:26 broke the previous 6k program record of 20:33, and Dobb's time of 20:29 moved her into second all time. Freshmen
Tabatha Walford,
Alexis Melendrez and
Mikayla Shults all made their Wolf Pack debuts in the race, with Walford scoring for the Pack.
Â
Walford's time of 21:44 put her at fourth on the freshman all-time list, one spot ahead of Melendrez. Shults came in at 15th on the list.
Â
Following her performance at the Dellinger Invitational, Sickler was named Mountain West Cross Country Athlete of the Week, and Wolf Pack Student-Athlete of the week.
Â
Next up for Nevada was the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals. Dobbs led the Pack with a 42nd place finish in the 234-person race. Ortega was second for Nevada with an 86th place finish. Walford again scored for the Wolf Pack, placing 141st.
Â
The Pack then opened up postseason action with a trip to San Diego, Calif. for the Mountain West Championship. Nevada took sixth in the loaded 11-team race, led by Dobbs and Sickler finishing 16th and 17th, respectively. Ortega came in at 26th to take third on the team.
Â
Nevada wrapped up the campaign with the NCAA Mountain Region Championships in Provo, Utah. Dobbs again led the Pack, coming in 21st and earning a spot on the all-region team. Dobbs' time of 20:30 was just a second behind her personal record of 20:29, set this year.
