Booth, Harned inside top 10 at Cal tournament

Both Booth and Harned carded career low rounds on Monday.

FAIRFAX, Calif. – After two rounds at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, the Nevada men's golf team is in fifth place after a strong 36-hole performance.

The Wolf Pack carded a team score of 271 in its opening round, which is tied for the fifth-lowest 18-hole team score in program history. The team followed that up with a round of 280 in the afternoon, which brings the 36-hole total to 551, third-lowest in program history. Nevada led the event in the early portion of the morning session and now sits inside the top five with one round remaining.

Nevada's two-round total of 551 is good for 17-under par, one shot behind Arizona State for fourth, three shots back of Santa Clara for third and five shy of San Diego State for second. Tournament host California will take a seven-shot lead into Tuesday's final round at 29-under par. All but five of the 16 teams in the field finished day one under par.

The Pack are in position to post a top five finish thanks to solid play up and down its lineup. Senior Grant Booth had a superb day on the golf course as he sits in sole possession of sixth place in the 88-player field at 8-under par. Booth played a near flawless round of golf in the morning, firing a career-low round of 64, which is tied for the second-lowest individual round in program history.

Booth's only mistake on the first set of 18 holes was a bogey on the par 4 12th, the rest of his round consisted of six birdies and an eagle on hole No. 1, which tied him for the individual lead after 18 holes. In the second round he followed up with another round under par, a 1-under 71. He again made an eagle during his round, this time on the 15th hole. He is five shots back of K.K. Limbhasut of California for the individual lead.

Another Wolf Pack golfer inside the top 10 is newcomer, and walk-on, Sam Harned, who enters Tuesday's final round tied for ninth place. Harned posted a career day with two rounds in the 60s, a career-low 67 in the morning and a 2-under 69 in the afternoon, which puts him at 6-under for the tournament. Harned played his best golf of the day on the back nine, playing those nine holes at 5-under par through both rounds.

Playing in a tough field, Nevada has two additional players under par but log jammed back into a tie for 30th, redshirt junior Jooho Lee and freshman Joey Vrzich. Lee began his day very well with five birdies through his first nine holes, which gave him the individual lead at the time. He made a couple of bogeys through the remainder of his first round but still finished with a solid 2-under 69. In round two an unfortunate triple bogey on No. 6 dropped him a few strokes to card a 1-over 72.

Vrzich and Lee flip flopped scores as Vrzich recorded a 72 in his opening round but came back in the afternoon to notch a 2-under round of 69, which tied his career low. He totaled nine birdies throughout his day, including four on the back nine of his second round.

Senior Corey Eddings rounded out the list of Pack golfers and is tied for 41st at 1-over par. Eddings recorded solid scores of an even par 71 in round one and a 1-over 72 in round two and made eagle on the par 5 13th in the opening 18 holes.

Nevada concludes the Alister MacKenzie Invitational with the final round tomorrow. Live scoring is available on GolfStat.com.
