RENO, Nev. - For the fourth time this season,
Sean Yamaguchi was named Mountain West Freshman of the Week as the conference announced its weekly honors Monday.
Over the Wolf Pack's 3-1 week, which included a series victory at home over San Diego State, Yamaguchi batted .429 (6-for-14), driving in five runs and homering twice.
Against the Aztecs, Yamaguchi batted .364 (4-for-11) with two homers, four RBIs, and three walks, capped by walking off Sunday's series-clinching win with a two-run single in the seventh, securing the 11-1 victory.
Yamaguchi hit solo homers in each of the first two games of the series, with his Saturday home run being his 10th in Mountain West play, tying the 20-year-old freshman record set by New Mexico's Jordan Pacheco (2005).
His performance was one of many by the Wolf Pack which propelled Nevada to a one-game lead atop the Mountain West standings heading into this week's final three games of the regular season. Nevada (31-20, 17-10 MW) travels to San José State for the Thursday-Saturday series with a chance to secure its fourth Mountain West regular-season title and the No. 1 seed at May 21-24's Credit Union 1 Mountain West Championship in Mesa, Ariz.
The Wolf Pack, with Sunday's win combined with losses by Fresno State and New Mexico, clinched a top-two seed and a bye into the double-elimination portion of the tournament.
For the year, Yamaguchi leads the Wolf Pack with 13 home runs, 63 hits, 48 runs scored, and a .597 slugging percentage, while batting .330 with 42 RBIs.
