MORAGA, Calif. -Â Saint Mary's used 13-straight runs to overcome Nevada's early lead and send the Wolf Pack to a 16-10 defeat Monday in Moraga.
Nevada (19-14) pounded out eight hits and seven runs through its first three innings, thanks primarily to a two-run
Mikey Cruz Jr. double in the five-run second and a solo homer from
Nate Snakenborg in the top of the third.
But in the bottom half is when things unraveled. Makoa Sniffen led off with a solo homer off of Wolf Pack starter
Mahiro Tomita, then the Gaels quickly loaded the bases. Nick Allred's slow grounder scored a run, and a sacrifice fly from Dario Freschi against reliever
Nik Miller made it a one-run game at 7-6. Brett Williams tied the game with a two-out double.
Back-to-back homers from Diego Castellanos and Sniffen to start the fourth gave Saint Mary's the lead for good, and the Gaels (22-14) tacked on another to make it 10-7. Six more Saint Mary's runs in the fifth put the Wolf Pack in too deep a hole the rest of the way.
Snakenborg was a bright spot for the Pack, going 2-for-3 with a homer and double, while
Jacob Doyle hit a three-run homer late to bring his team-leading figure to 11 and wrap a four-RBI day. Five Wolf Pack batters finished with two hits, including Cruz Jr. who extended his hitting streak to 18 games.
Sniffen went 4-for-5 with two homers and four RBIs to lead the Gaels, while Williams also had four hits and Tanner Griffith also drove in four runs.
Miller fell to 2-2 with the loss, while the trio of
Eddie Tierney,
Kainoa Kaneshiro and
Greyson Osbun combined to hold the Gaels scoreless over the final 3.2 innings.
Joseph Moreno picked up his first win for the Gaels, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings and striking out two.
Nevada returns to Mountain West play this weekend in Albuquerque, visiting New Mexico for a three-game set beginning Friday at 5 p.m. PT.
