LP: Peter Herrick (1-2)
RENO, Nev. - Jayce Dobie's 10th hit of the weekend series against San José State got out and over the left-field fence in a hurry in the bottom of the ninth Sunday, the three-run homer walking off a 5-4 win for Nevada.
The homer capped Nevada's three-run ninth to overcome a two-run deficit, and for Dobie capped a weekend over which he batted .833 (10-for-12) with a four-hit performance in each of the final two games.
San José State (14-21, 5-7 MW) looked to have the upper hand after Peyton Rowles' two-run single in the top of the ninth broke a 2-2 tie. But
Sam Kane battled to a walk to lead off the Wolf Pack ninth then
Jack Metcho lined a single through the right side to put runners at the corners.
Two batters later, Dobie drove a 2-2 offering from Peter Herrick deep and out to left, the no-doubter touching off a Pack pile at the plate.
Andres Castro earned his second win of the season, closing the ninth for Nevada. He bookended a pitching effort started by older brother
Alessandro Castro, who allowed just one earned run on five hits and struck out four over five strong innings. Reliever
Dominic Desch struck out four over three-plus innings, working into the ninth.
The Spartans took a 2-0 lead in the first. With two out and a runner on first, JC Osorio-Agard lined a single into left-center. Kane fumbled the hop in left, which allowed Rowles to score from first. Osorio-Agard, now at second, came in on Brent Cota's line-drive single to center for the 2-0 lead.
Nevada (19-13, 8-4 MW) continued to put runners on base against Spartan starter Dylan Smith, who allowed just one run over six innings, but could not breakthrough until
Jacob Doyle launched his team-leading 10th homer of the season to lead off the sixth.
Jackson Waller, who capped a solid weekend at the plate with a 3-for-4 day, tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single to center which plated Doyle.
Nevada heads out for four games next week, beginning Monday at 3 p.m. at Saint Mary's. The road week continues with a three-game Mountain West set at New Mexico beginning Friday.
