RENO, Nev. – Nevada cross country head coach
Kirk Elias announced the team's 2024 season, Friday.
"This will be a fun challenging season for our cross country squads." Said head coach
Kirk Elias. "Our regular season includes competitions at two national class programs, Northern Arizona and Oregon. At the end of the season, we will host the NCAA Mountain Regional Championship for the first time." Elias commented on the new and improved rosters for 2024 stating, "the women's team is a promising mix of veterans and new talent. The men are likely to be a completely veteran team by mid-season. Both teams hold the promise of punching above their weight by championship season."
The squad will be starting their season at the George Kyte Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona, Saturday, August 31. This will be the first time both squads will be competing at NAU's event. The Pack will be up against high level talent in Flagstaff, Arizona. They will continue their season by crossing state lines to California, to compete in the UCR Invitational, hosted by UC Riverside, Saturday, September 21.
After a two-week break the squads will return to high level competition at the Dellinger Invitational hosted by the University of Oregon, Friday, October 11. This will be the first time the Pack have competed at high-ranked Oregon's event since 2018.
The Pack will round out their regular season at the Mountain West Championships in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Friday, November 1. This will be a good chance for the squads to see where they stand before looking towards the postseason. Following the conclusion of the conference championships, the Pack will be hosting the NCAA Regionals at Washoe County Golf Course, Friday, November 15. This will mark the first time Nevada will host a nationally sanctioned event for the first time in school and program history. To conclude the season for the Wolf Pack is the NCAA Championships in Madison, Wisconsin, Saturday, November 23.
Last season, the Wolf Pack men and women finished seventh and eighth respectively at the Mountain West Championships. Between the two squads, they had thirteen top-65 finishes highlighted by a 22nd place finish by
Daniel Sayo. In the postseason, Nevada's
Daniel Sayo and
Ashley Boone displayed great performances at the NCAA Mountain Regional in Lubbock, Texas, Daniel finishing 44th, the second-highest at a regional by a male Wolf Pack runner since the program was reinstated in 2019.
Ashley Boone finished strongly with a personal best on the women's side. The men finished 15th and the women finished 17th.
