Jardin and Martino Lead The Pack at NCAA Mountain Regionals

RENO, Nev. - Tryon Jardin notched a top-60 finish and smashed his personal record, while Natalia Martino led the way for the women Friday morning as Nevada Cross Country wrapped its 2024 campaign at the NCAA Mountain Regional in Reno, Nevada.

The Nevada women finished 19th in the team standings, while the men came in at 14th on the Washoe Golf Course.

"The women put in good efforts." Coach Elias said. "Natalia Martino and Marina Renna in particular raced well for themselves. We had two under the weather which really took the sting out our line up. Tryon Jardin and Soma Baligad were the standouts for the men with distinctively gritty efforts. I was proud of both teams. They are a good group of athletes who train hard."

Junior Tryon Jardin led the way for the Pack on the men's side. Jardin was in 65th position at the 2.5k checkpoint and he gradually made his way through the Pack. Checkpoint by checkpoint Jardin gained on his competitors and by the last checkpoint before the finish, he had gained seven points, finishing in 58th (30:36.1). Jardin smashed his personal record by over 40 seconds, an outstanding performance, in the snowy conditions.

Daniel Sayo, a consistent top runner for the Pack, ran solidly Friday, maintaining his position from the halfway point on, going on to finish in 64th (30:55.8). Soma Baligad also put in a gritty performance for the Pack, gaining twenty places after the second checkpoint (2.5km) to go from 96th to 76th. A near personal record race for Baligad (31:14.7), he put in another solid performance following his 46th place at the MW Conference Championships last week.

Jaedyn Chase (88th, 31:44.4), Celime Garcia (93rd, 32:05.0), Pierce Simpkins (98th, 32:22.1), Dillon Walker (106th, 33.03.5), rounded out the seven-member Wolf Pack squad Friday.

Natalia Martino paced the Wolf Pack women in the first race of the day, holding her place from the opening checkpoint to the finish of the six-kilometer course. Martino followed her strong performance last week at the MW Conference Championships (35th). Martino was closely followed by Claire Nelson, less than ten seconds behind, finishing in 92nd (21:57.1). Following them was Marina Renna, who ran a strong race, picking up 20 spots from the 2.5km checkpoint to finish in 95th.

Madelyn Shipman (114th, 22:47.1), Aubrey Thompson (116th, 22:52.9), Hannah Lee (120th, 23:10.9), Ashley Boone (121st, 23:24.9) rounded out the seven for the Wolf Pack women.

This was Head Coach Kirk Elias' last outing as the leader of the men's and women's cross country teams, he said "it has been a honor to work at Nevada. What a great place to work and train distance runners."
