RENO, Nev. - The top two teams in the Mountain West standings face off this weekend as Nevada (14-13, 7-4 MW) visits conference leader UNLV (20-9, 11-1 MW) for a three-game set Friday-Sunday.
Friday's opener is set for a 6:05 p.m. first pitch, with Saturday set for 1:05 p.m. and Sunday at 12:05 p.m.
All three games will be broadcast locally on Nevada Sports Net, and over the airwaves at 94.1 FM/1450 AM CBS Sports Radio, with John Ramey on the call.
LAST TIME OUT
Nevada enters this weekend's series on a three-game winning streak, its second run of at least three-straight this season.
The Pack rebounded from dropping the opener of its weekend series against San Diego State, taking the next two games, and the series, with wins of 12-6 and 8-6. Nevada added a midweek victory, banging out 21 hits and scoring 20 times in a 20-5 victory over visiting Sacramento State.
Tuesday against the Hornets, each of the Pack's nine starters recordedc at least one hit, with four players recording a three-hit game. On the hill,
Alejandro Murillo went six strong, striking out six and limiting Sacramento State to just a run on three hits.
ABOUT UNLV
UNLV (20-9, 11-1 MW) has won six in a row going into this weekend's series with the Pack, defeating UC Riverside, 12-1, Tuesday, following a three-game sweep of New Mexico.
The Rebels outscored the Lobos, 57-13, over the series, culminating in a 27-6 win in Sunday's finale.
Last season, the Pack went 4-2 against the Rebels, winning the last four meetings. The home-and-home wrapped up with a three-game Wolf Pack sweep at Peccole Park from May 8-9.
EVERYONE IN ON THE ACT
Nevada's 20-5 win over Sacramento State Tuesday featured everyone enjoying the party, as each of the nine Pack starters recorded at least one hit. Four Pack players,
Dario Gomez,
Dawson Martin,
Jacob Stinson, and
Landon Wallace, posted three-hit games.
It marked the second game this season in which all nine starters had a least one hit apiece, as the Pack achieved the feat in March 13's 15-10 win over San José State.
ANOTHER 20-20 GAME
For the third time this season, Nevada turned in a 20-run, 20-hit performance, doing so again in Tuesday's 20-5 victory over Sacramento State. The Pack finished the game with 21 hits, led by four players with three apiece.
The previous 20-20 occasions this season for the Pack came Feb. 19 at Grand Canyon (21 hits in 20-2 victory) and March 22 at San Francisco (22 hits in the 20-2 win).
THE TOP TWO SQUARE OFF
This weekend's series in Vegas features the Mountain West's top-two teams in the standings, as well as its top-two offensive squads.
Entering Friday's opener, UNLV (11-1) has a 3.5-game lead in the standings over the 7-4 Wolf Pack. In the conference's statistical rankings, the Rebels and Wolf Pack rank 1-2, respectively, in the following offensive categories: batting average (.334-.309), runs scored (277-231), hits (364-303), on-base percentage (.427-.409), and RBIs (253-210).
