DAVIS, CALIF. – The Nevada track and field started their outdoor season this Saturday, which saw the team earn multiple first place finishes and a third place team finish with 89 points.
The javelin throw saw all eight Wolf Pack athletes who competed in the event place in the top-20. Sophomore Emily Poole, who competed in her first meet with the Pack, finished the event in first with her mark of 45.48 meters. This mark earning her the top spot, and beating her old personal best of 44.83m she set at North Dakota State.
Three seniors also finished in the top-five for the javelin. Anna Maria Sommerfeld finished the event in third with her mark of 40.51m. Gaia Osborne, who saw her first competition action of the year, finished in 4th with a mark of 39.75m. Finally, Nicola Ader finished the meet in 5th with her mark of 38.99m.
The four other Pack athletes in the top-20 included freshman Isabelle Steerman, who finished in 7th in her first collegiate competition with her mark of 37.08m. Senior Hanah Smrt would earn a 15th place finish and a new personal best with her mark of 28.62m. Freshman Alia Minoletti finished in 16th with her first collegiate mark of 28.36m. Finally, junior Rachel Garrison finished in 18th with a mark of 26.48m.
In the long jump, junior Gabby Fraser finished the event in third with her mark of 5.55m. This mark was not only good enough for a top-3 finish, but was also a personal best for Fraser. The distance beating her old mark of 5.39m.
For the triple jump, Fraser also earned another third place finish. Her mark of 11.73m was good enough to once again put her in the top-three. Sophomore Maya Aiyuk, who competed in her first collegiate meet, finished in 11th with a mark of 10.81m.
The pole vault saw similar marks from three Pack athletes. Sophomore Samantha Irwin, freshman Shayla Pedersen, and freshman Hannah Watson all finished with a mark of 3.20m.
The Pack sprinters also saw tons of success throughout the day, starting in the 4x100m relay, which saw the Nevada 'A' team finish in first. The team of sophomore Lillian Gregg, junior Emily Costello, sophomore Sarah Marske, and junior Rayven Nealey finished with a time of 47.28. This race being Marske's first time competing in the collegiate event, and Nealey's best mark in the event.
Success would continue for the likes of Marske, who would finish in first during the 100m hurdles. Her time of 14.43 was good enough for both the top finish, and a new personal best. Beating her old mark of 14.57 that she set at the University of San Francisco.
The 400m dash would see two other sprinters finish in the top-three. Senior Carolyn Ross would finish the event on top with her time of 57.60. Sophomore Kylie Burton would finish in third with her time of 58.79. Both of these times were collegiate firsts for the athletes.
In the 100m dash, Costello finished in 2nd place with a time of 11.98. Just .30 seconds off her 6th place Nevada all-time mark. Also competing in the event was Gregg, who finished in 10th with a time of 12.55. This was Gregg's first collegiate 100m dash.
Some other distance marks during the day included freshman Madelyn Shipman, who finished the 2000m steeplechase with a time of 7:49.16. This event was Shipman's first collegiate track competition. Another time was set by senior Kate Rye, who finished the 1500m with a time of 4:43.21. The time earning Rye a 10th place finish, and beats her old personal best mark of 4:45.08
The men's cross country team also saw action during the Aggie Open, competing in two events. One of the events was the 1500m run, which saw junior Jared Marchegger earn a second place finish. His time of 3:54.27 was good enough for the top-two finish, and was just around two seconds behind the first place time of 3:52.72.
Other times in the 1500m include a time of 4:12.44 by freshman Ryan Petzing. The time put him at 25th in the event. Sophomore Kyle Elias finished in 35th with a time of 4:19.88. Lastly, sophomore Matthew Kruse finished in 41st with a time of 4:24.42.
In the 3000m, the event saw seven men's athletes finish in the top-40. Two of which finished in the top-10. Sophomore Daniel Sayo finished the event in eighth with a time of 8:23.70. Just behind him in ninth was junior Adam Sjolund, who finished with a time of 8:23.97.
Some other top times by the Pack include a time earned by junior Carson Leavitt, whose time of 8:25.24 earned him a 12th place finish. Sophomore Andrew Ribeiro would finish the meet in 19th with his time of 8:31.89. In 27th place was junior Celime Garcia with his time of 8:46.15. Junior Alex Mendoza finished the event in 35th with a time of 8:52.16. Finally, freshman Soma Baligad's time of 8:53.70 was good enough for a 38th place finish.
This concludes the first regular season outdoor meet for the Pack. The team will look to continue this momentum on Mar. 19 when they compete in the Hornet Invitational.
