Ader earns two medals in second day of MW Championships

CLOVIS, CALIF. – After a successful first day of competition, senior Nicola Ader earned two medals in the second day of the Mountain West Outdoor Championships.

The heptathlon started with the long jump to get day two going. Ader would finish second overall with a distance of 5.79 meter. The distance would earn her 786 points. Junior Hanah Smrt would be just behind Ader with her distance of 5.76m. This earning the junior 777 points. Lastly, sophomore Anna Maria Sommerfeld finished with a distance of 5.29m and 640 points.

The javelin was where the Wolf Pack saw their most success. Sommerfeld finished first overall in the event, earning a personal best distance of 43.34m and 731 points. Ader would also earn a new personal best with her second place distance of 42.72m. The distance earned her 720 points. Lastly, Smrt would earn a personal best of 27.85m and 436 points.

Lastly, the heptathlon finished with the 800m run. Ader finished fourth overall with a time of 2:26.13 and 742 points. Sommerfeld earned another personal best with a time of 2:30.06 and also earned 692 points. Smrt would earn a personal best of 2:30.63 and would add 685 points to her final ader.

Ader would finish the heptathlon as the champion with her point total of 5,607. This not only improving her third Nevada all-time placement, but also earning the team 10 points. Sommerfeld would finish fifth with 5,061 points. This earned the team four points and put Sommerfeld at 10th all-time at Nevada, passing Lea Halmans point total of 4,906. Lastly, Smrt finished in eighth with a point total of 4,726. Her placement also scored for the Pack, which gave them a point. 

Ader, Smrt, and sophomore Olaia Becerill later competed in the long jump. Ader would move on to the finals, and earn a bronze medal with her distance of 5.91m. She also earned the team six points. Becerill would also move on to the finals where she finished in eighth with her distance of 5.75. Good enough to earn her team a point. Smrt would finish 16th with a distance of 5.41m.

The Pack throughout the day had plenty of finals qualifications and new all-time marks. In the 1500m, sophomore Tabatha Walford finished with a time of 4:32.94. This not only good enough to qualify her to the finals tomorrow at 6:30 p.m., but also put her time at 10th all-time at Nevada. The time passed Lisa Myles 4:33.00 time in 1993. Senior Stefanie Ortega also competed in the event where she finished 14th with a time of 4:35.76.

Sophomore Emily Costello would join Walford in qualifying in an event. Costello finished in fourth and qualified for the 400m dash with her time of 54.83. Senior Lauren Green would finish the meet in 11th with her time of 56.38. Just two spots below qualification. Costello will compete in the finals at 7:10 p.m. 

Freshman Raegan Gorzeman moved into the Nevada all-time list in her respective event. The 800m saw Gorzeman earn a 17th place finish in the 800m run with her time 2:11.87. This also currently puts her at 10th all-time at Nevada in the event. She passed LaNaya Wattree's 2007 time of 2:11.90.

A couple of Pack seniors competed in some of their final events. Senior Emma Dern finished the shot put in 13th with her distance of 13.05m. Senior Brooke Carson competed in the 100m dash, where the senior would finish in 19th with her time of 12.38. Senior Carli Corpus finished in 13th in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:11.26.

The Pack and their 22 points look to compete in the last day of the MW Outdoor Championships tomorrow. The first event being the javelin throw starting at 1:00 p.m.
