Game Notes: Boise State

WHAT'S ON THE AGENDA?
  • Nevada and Boise State face each other for a three-game series to close out conference play.
  • The Pack and Broncos start the weekend with a double-header, beginning at 12 p.m. (PT) on Friday.
  • Nevada will end the weekend with a single game on Saturday scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • Nevada swept rival UNLV, 3-0, on May 8-9 in Hixson Park.
  • The Pack took the series opener, 6-0, and edged the Rebels again in game two, 6-3.
  • Nevada clinched the sweep in the series finale, defeating UNLV 6-5.
 
SCOUTING BOISE STATE
  • The Broncos are led offensively by Ashlyn Adams, who is batting .358 with 49 hits, 20 runs, 12 RBI, 11 stolen bases, eight doubles and one home run in 42 games. Bella Rocco, who was named MW Co-Freshman of the Week, also powers Boise State with a .333 batting average, 38 hits, 23 RBI, 14 runs, five home runs and four doubles.
  • Bailey Hannah leads Boise State at pitcher with an 8-1 record. Sara Johnson 's (3-10) 80 innings are the most of any Boise State pitcher. Taylor Caudill (4-8) and Kiele Miller (4-4) tie for second-most wins on the staff.
 
NEVADA SWEEPS UNLV
Nevada handed rival UNLV its first conference sweep and conference series loss on May 8-9 at Hixson. The Pack opened the weekend with a 6-0 shutout victory and clinched the series in game two, defeating UNLV 6-3. Nevada closed the series with a 6-5 victory over UNLV on May 9.
Graduating senior Julia Jensen (3-3) recorded the series finale win in the circle for the Pack. Seniors Haley Burda, Kenzi Goins, Sierra Mello, Sadaria McAlister and Ashley Salausa combined for six hits to power Nevada's offense. Jensen tossed 5.2 innings, striking out a season-high seven hitters and giving up four runs on six hits. Sophomore Kendall Fritz secured her fourth save of the season after throwing the last 1.1 innings. Fritz struck out one hitter and gave up one run on three hits. Nevada saw offensive dynamite from Salausa, Lauren Gutierrez and Sam Oliver. Salausa and Gutierrez dominated all game, going 2-for-3, including a solo home run, with two RBI and one run each. Oliver, who went 2-for-3, also sparked Nevada the plate. Sierra Mello stayed hot on Sunday and tallied her second home run of the weekend, a two-run slam in the first, to give Nevada an early edge. McAlister went 1-for-4 with a triple and two runs. Goins had a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 and drawing a walk. Burda also pieced together a strong performance with one hit.
 
Kendall Fritz starred on the mound in game one, tossing a five-hit complete shutout. The game one victory also marked Fritz's third-consecutive shutout and the ninth of her career. In seven innings, Fritz struck out four UNLV hitters. In game two, Fritz threw another complete game and only gave up three runs on four hits. Fritz totaled four strikeouts to pace Nevada. Nevada was powered offensively by Sam Oliver in game one. Oliver went 2-for-3, including a home run, with two RBI and one run. The Pack also saw strong offensive production by Lauren Gutierrez, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Sierra Mello also pieced together a strong game with her third home run of the season. Chelie Senini, Sadaria McAlister and Jessica Sellers also chipped in with a hit each. In game two, nine Wolf Pack players recorded at least one hit against UNLV. Four Pack players recorded multiple hits. Senini propelled Nevada offensively, going 2-for-3, scoring two runs and tallying an RBI. Gutierrez, who went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI, was also dominant for Nevada. Gutierrez registered two doubles for the second time in her career and first since Nevada defeated Sacramento State on March 8, 2020. Haley Burda went 2-for-3 with a double. Sellers also paced Nevada with two hits and scored two runs. McAlister went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a stolen base. Kenzi Goins, Ashley Salausa, Oliver and Mello each registered a hit.
 
FIVE MEMBERS EARN MW HONORS
Five members of the Nevada softball team have earned All-Mountain West honors, the conference announced on Wednesday. Senior Sadaria McAlister and freshman Chelie Senini were named First Team All-Mountain West. Senior Haley Burda, sophomore Kendall Fritz and freshman Sam Oliver earned Mountain Second Team All-Mountain West accolades.

KEEPING UP WITH KENDALL

  • Fritz went 2-0 in the circle on May 8 and recorded her fourth save of the season on May 9. In three games, she posted a 183 ERA in 15.1 innings with nine strikeouts and limut four to pace Nevada to its second victory of the day and clinch the series victory. Until UNLV scored two runs in the top of the third in game two, Fritz had pitched 20.2 consecutive innings without allowing a run. Fritz ended the weekend with a save in the series finale win after entering the game in the sixth. Fritz worked  the Pack out of a jam with two runners on, striking out a UNLV hitter to end the inning.
  • Fritz notched her 100th strikeout of the season in Nevada's 2-0 win over California Baptist on April 30. On May 8, Fritz recorded her 300th career strikeout in Nevada's 6-0 win against UNLV.
  • Fritz received her second-career Mountain West Pitcher of the Week honor on April 20 after her 2-0 performance during the Colorado State series.
  • Against the Rams, Fritz compiled a 0.93 ERA in 15 innings of work. Fritz also notched 10 strikeouts in her two appearances.
  • Fritz was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 16, which was the sophomore's first weekly honor of her career. 
STEALING RECORDS
  • A stolen base against Stanford on March 5 made Sadaria McAlister the new record holder for most career stolen bases in Wolf Pack softball history. The previous record was held by Brittany Puzey, who had 42 career stolen bases.
  • In addition, McAlister brings a .336 batting average,  which ranks eighth in the conference, heading into this weekend.
  • McAlister also broke Nevada's record for most single season stolen bases on April 30 against California Baptist. The previous record (19) was held by Britton Murdock and Brittany Puzey. McAlister currently has 22 stolen bases on the season, which ranks second in the Mountain West.
HEY SENINI
  • Freshman Chelie Senini has been a standout performer for Nevada, starting all 37 games as a freshman this season.
  • Heading into this weekend, Senini holds a .331 batting average with 45 hits, 28 runs, 19 stolen bases and 11 RBI. In addition, Senini's 45 hits rank third in the Mountain West this season. 
  • Senini's 19 stolen bases this season are tied for second-most in program history.
  • Senini's 19 stolen bases are the third-most in the Mountain West.
